Tameside - Local Tourist Information

A little background information.

Tameside  consists of the nine towns of Ashton-under-Lyne, Audenshaw, Denton, Droylsden, Dukinfield, Hyde, Longdendale, Mossley and Stalybridge.  The region takes it's name from the River Tame which runs right through the heart of the borough.

It's situated in the north west of England just east of Manchester city centre.  During the 18th century it had a thriving cotton and textiles industry which grew thanks to it's canal network which takes you through some very picturesque areas and links Manchester with Huddersfield.  These canals have been restored today and are still frequently used by barges and canal boats.  If you ever find yourself on a boat passing through the locks of Tameside be sure to stop off at Portland Basin in Ashton for a little bit of history or Armentieres Square in Stalybridge for a hot or cold drink in one of the many bars and cafe's surrounding it.

Whatever you're looking for whether it be cinema, theatre, museums and gallery's, sports, food, nightlife, nature and wildlife or shops and shopping, you'll find things to do for the whole family.
